Famous Polish Film director Krzysztof Zanussi will be a keynote speaker at the conference “Television as Business” on Thursday, September 15. The conference holds during unique range of international events for television, movie and other media business experts Kiev Media Week.

Krzysztof Zanussi is one of the most famous world film directors. He made about 40 motion and TV films. Most of them gained various awards at the world-known festivals.

We asked Mr Zanussi a few questions and give an expert evaluation of modern film and television:

Where is present film market moving to? What are its main qualities?

“In any society, like in nature there are always developing two contrasting processes - one leads towards uniformisation, the other to differentiation. Globalization unifies our cultures - in general television all over the world is very much alike with its formats, series copied from one station to another. On the opposite pole a you-tube and niche distribution, specialised channels and they try to meet most extravagant demands of the audience.”

What in your opinion is role of TV for the audience?

“Television has two complementary aspects. It is a business - and should bring people what they want in order to earn money. And television has a mission and should tend to form the opinions and make an effort to improve the society. This applies both to public and private channels. However in private ones business prevails, in public mission is more important.”

Which main things should know those ones creating films and TV?

“In my personal view nowadays the main issue in programming mass media is social responsibility. In other words it is a scale of values one applies evacuating various projects. Any programmer of media should have a clear vision of what is a common good in their society, in their nation in given time.”
